The Free Campus Press movement (FCPM) as well as other journalism organisations have intensified the campaign to reinstate Kunle Adebajo, the student journalist suspended by the management of the University of Ibadan.
Organisations like Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ), Nigerian Institute of Journalism and editors of newspapers have joined the #FreeKunleAdebajo #FreeCampusPress campaign.
In an open letter from FCPM to the Vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka, the group stated their resilience and commitment to the recall of Kunle Adebajo.
We believe you have got information about our campaign to get Kunle Adebajo reinstated and that we are scared that you are unknowingly killing campus journalism which will be dangerous for journtalism as a whole.
"We look forward seeing you using your good office to stop this victimization of not only Kunle Adebajo but all campus journalists. We will continue to demand this because we know it is a right."
"campus journalists are not alone. we are surrounded by a big family of the pen, not only in Nigeria but across the world."
Also in a Press release signed by Olufemi Joshua, the Program director of
PTCIJ, the organisation appealed to the management to review the decision.
"Believing in this leadership promise of UI, PTCIJ appeals to the authorities to invest its decision to review this case in the long tradition of the University for tolerance, for investment in constructive dissent and contention, knowing full well that such an example carries the full promise of multiplier impact in a political season of tension and rigid positioning." the release read.
Asides the issuing of statements and press releases, the social media campaign has also witnessed massive turnouts. On Twitter, Africa Mil, Civil Press society, NIJ and many others have retweeted campaign statements sent.
Meanwhile, OAU KILONSHELE learnt that FCPM, through the team, will organise a world press conference today, June 19 at Association of Campus Journalists' secretariat, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The conference, which will be streamed live on Facebook, has been slated to hold by 2pm.
