This has made the roads on campus more dangerous for everyone. In early February, students and staff saw workers repainting the old traffic lights. Many people hoped this meant the lights would soon start working again. But those hopes have faded, as the lights still do not work. A student said, “When they painted the lights, we thought they would fix them. But nothing has changed. The lights look good, but they are not useful.” The traffic lights at busy places like SUB, Aluta–Faj Annex Road, Road 5 near the Faculty of Agriculture, and the area around the Senate Building are now just colourful poles. Ifeoluwa Lambe Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, held its 2025 Library Week from April 22 to 24. The event focused on the theme “ Read, Reflect, React: The Transformative Power of Reading in Personal and National Development .” It included exhibitions, readings, and a public lecture to encourage reading and creativity. On April 23, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, gave the main lecture at the African Centre of Excellence Main Hall. His talk, titled “The Reader’s Journey: Navigating National Development through the Lens of Literacy,” explained how reading helps people become informed and supports the country’s progress. The event was organized by Sunday Osuntoye, a final-year medical student and author of the newly published book, An Epistle to Medical Students: Making the Most of the Long Years . Abdulkareem Basit Emmanuel Innocent, a final-year student at Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, has been named one of only four recipients worldwide of the prestigious 2024 IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) Undergraduate Student Fellowship. According to his LinkedIn post, he is the sole awardee representing the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. The IEEE EDS Undergraduate Student Fellowship is awarded to undergraduate students who have excellent academic records and a strong interest in pursuing graduate research in electron devices and microelectronics. The fellowship includes a $1,000 scholarship and an award plaque. Esther   Olatunji The Security Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) recovered a stolen phone belonging to a student on Wednesday night at the Oduduwa Lecture Theatre (ODLT) on campus. The affected student, who preferred to remain anonymous, recounted the stressful experience. “I was at ODLT attending a lecture and stepped out briefly to get food. When I returned to Captain Cook, I realized my phone was missing from my bag. I panicked immediately and started searching around, other students nearby joined in the search, but we couldn’t find it. Someone then advised me to contact the Security Council", the student said. Upon contacting the Security Council, the student was asked to provide personal details, including their email address and phone number, to assist in tracking the missing device. Abdulkareem Basit  Ibrahim-Khaleel Oladepo, a fourth-year student of Agricultural Economics at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), has spearheaded an initiative that has provided free JAMB e-pins to over 120 students, primarily from the Southwest region of Nigeria.  Khaleel said he launched this initiative after receiving numerous requests from students in need. "Earlier this year, I received numerous requests from students in need and appeals for institutional support for this initiative," he said. Despite economic challenges, his team remained committed to the cause, successfully distributing the free e-pins starting from February 15th.  The recipients expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, which brought relief and joy to their lives. This has raised concerns about workplace safety and the handling of the investigation by the university management. Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist, lost his life on February 19, 2024, after being attacked by a lion he had cared for since its birth nine years ago. The incident occurred while he was feeding the lions, and despite efforts by his colleagues, he succumbed to his injuries. Following the attack, the lion was euthanized, and an investigation was ordered by the university.
