Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, on Thursday celebrated Nigeria's rich cultural heritage as students, staff, and community groups showcased diverse traditions during the Cultural Day held as part of activities marking the institution's 65th anniversary.

The event, held at the Motion Ground, featured cultural performances, indigenous food and art exhibitions, music, dance, and poetry presentations aimed at promoting unity in diversity and preserving Nigeria's cultural identity.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor commended members of staff, students, and participating departments for their contributions to the success of the programme. He reaffirmed the university's commitment to preserving the beauty of the campus through tree-planting initiatives and announced plans to make the Cultural Day an annual event.

The celebration began with a colourful parade from the Cultural Centre to the venue, accompanied by traditional music and dance performances.

One of the highlights of the event was a presentation by students of the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Arts, who demonstrated the connection between African identity and global engagement. The students also rendered the Great Ife Anthem in French, drawing applause from participants.

Students of the Department of Linguistics showcased Yoruba cultural heritage through traditional dance, music, and chants, while members of the Arewa community expressed gratitude for the institution's inclusiveness and called for greater recognition of cultural diversity within the university.

The Department of Dramatic Arts also entertained guests with performances depicting different cultural traditions from across Nigeria, while pupils from Sunshine School delivered songs, dance performances, and poetry recitations in Yoruba language.

Musical performances further enlivened the occasion, including an appearance by G-Dave, while Professor Mrs. Faleye delivered a historical presentation in Yoruba language that highlighted aspects of indigenous history and culture.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) joined the celebration with a dance performance that added colour to the event.

Beyond the performances, participants explored an exhibition of indigenous foods from different parts of Nigeria. The exhibition featured local delicacies including pounded yam and egusi, egbò and ewa, ekuru and ata, abacha, fiofio, and ewa aganyin, reflecting the country's diverse culinary traditions.

An art exhibition showcasing creative works by artists and students also formed part of the programme, with certificates presented to participants in recognition of their contributions.

The Cultural Day attracted students, staff, alumni, and visitors from within and outside the university community, providing a platform to celebrate cultural diversity while reinforcing OAU's commitment to preserving and promoting Nigeria's heritage.

The event concluded with closing remarks by the Vice-Chancellor, bringing the fourth day of the university's 65th anniversary celebration to an end.
