OAU Retains Fifth Position in Nigeria CWUR 2026 Rankings
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has retained its position as the fifth-best university in Nigeria in the 2026 edition of the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), while recording an improvement in its global standing.
The latest CWUR rankings placed OAU 1,884th in the world with an overall score of 66.6, making it one of the top 8.9 per cent of universities globally. The university maintained its fifth-place position nationally behind the University of Ibadan (UI), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), University of Lagos (UNILAG), and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU).
The University of Ibadan remained Nigeria’s highest-ranked university in 2026, placing first in the country and 1,042nd globally. This represents an improvement from its 2025 ranking of 1,062nd.
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka ranked second in Nigeria and 1,533rd globally, improving from 1,615th in 2025.
The University of Lagos held third position nationally and ranked 1,683rd globally, up from 1,758th in the previous year.
Ahmadu Bello University ranked fourth in Nigeria and improved its global position from 1,849th in 2025 to 1,779th in 2026.
OAU, on its part, moved from 1,966th globally in 2025 to 1,884th in 2026, while maintaining its fifth position nationally. The university also ranked 1,971st in 2024, indicating steady improvement in global performance over the past three years.
According to CWUR, more than 21,000 universities worldwide were evaluated in the 2026 edition, with only the top 2,000 institutions making the Global 2000 list.
The ranking assesses universities based on education quality, employability, faculty quality, and research performance, using objective performance indicators rather than surveys or institutional submissions.
A breakdown of OAU’s performance shows an employability rank of 1,715 and a research rank of 1,808, contributing to its overall score of 66.6.
The ranking highlights the continued presence of Nigerian universities on the global stage, with several institutions improving their positions compared to previous years.
