OAU Zoo Safety Concerns Persist One Year After Tragic Incident

One year after the tragic death of Olabode Olawuyi, a zookeeper at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), there is still no official report on the circumstances surrounding the incident. This has raised concerns about workplace safety and the handling of the investigation by the university management.

Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist, lost his life on February 19, 2024, after being attacked by a lion he had cared for since its birth nine years ago. The incident occurred while he was feeding the lions, and despite efforts by his colleagues, he succumbed to his injuries. Following the attack, the lion was euthanized, and an investigation was ordered by the university.

At a workshop held to mark the first anniversary of Olawuyi’s death, Matthew Oluwaniyi, chairman of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), OAU chapter, expressed disappointment over the delay in releasing the investigation report. He stated, “Regrettably, despite marking the first anniversary of his passing, we are yet to receive the official report on the circumstances surrounding his death.”

The workshop, titled Workplace Safety Awareness, emphasized the need for improved safety measures in work environments.

Oluwaniyi further highlighted that workplace safety should be treated as a priority. “This workshop is more than just an event. It is a reminder that safety is not just a conversation but a responsibility. We must ensure that the lessons from Comrade Olawuyi’s sacrifice lead to improved policies, better protective measures, and a workplace where no staff member feels unsafe in the line of duty,” he said.

The tragic incident has called attention to security and operational standards at OAU Zoo. Experts have suggested that improvements are needed in areas such as enclosure design, zookeeper training, and animal care practices to prevent future occurrences. There have also been calls for regular safety audits to ensure that both staff and visitors are protected.

The delay in releasing an official report on the tragedy based on the ordered investigation suggests that the university management has not treated the matter with the appropriate seriousness. This is a dishonor to the zookeeper who lost his life in such horrific circumstances while on duty. It is imperative that the university takes immediate action to address these concerns, not only to honor Olawuyi’s memory but also to ensure a safer environment for all staff and visitors at the zoo.
