Water Scarcity Hits Awolowo Hall, OAU; Hall Executives Seek Alternative Solutions

Students residing in Awolowo Hall at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have been grappling with a severe water shortage in the past four days, due to the damaged pumping machine serving the hall.
In a statement released by the Awolowo Hall Executive, the Hall Executive issued an apology for the inconvenience caused by the lack of water says efforts to rectify the situation are underway, with the hall executives actively working to find a solution to the damaged pumping machineand the the hall warden and the Division of Students Affairs are also involved in addressing the distress faced by the students.
In a meeting held earlier yesterday between the Division of Students Affairs and the hall leadership, it was disclosed that necessary measures are being taken to restore the damaged machine promptly.
As a temporary solution, the Hall Executives reached out to the management of Awolowo Hall Mosque for assistance. The MSSN Awo branch has pledged to supply clean and drinkable water to the students in Awolowo Hall during specific hours, which are between 4:30 am and 5:30 am, also 5 pm and 6 pm. Students are advised to adhere to specified guidelines, including appropriate dress code, a maximum daily limit of 25 liters per person, and maintaining good behavior when visiting the mosque.
Despite the increased accommodation fees from ₦2590, ₦3090 to ₦25,000 and ₦30,000 respectively, students in Awolowo Hall express frustration over the school management's delay in fixing the pumping machine. Adetola, a student residing in the hall, lamented the urgency of fixing the machine, emphasizing that water is a non-negotiable necessity.
Speaking with one of the hall representatives, he disclosed that during a discussion with the Hall Chairman yesterday, the Chairman revealed that they have informed the hall management and Division of Students Affairs (DSA), but no concrete steps have been taken to repair the damaged machine. However, there were reports of individuals checking the pipes in the hall both yesterday and today.
