By Olufemi Alfred .O.
In the 2018 proposed budget presented on the 7th of November by the office of the President, Muhammadu Buhari, Obafemi Awolowo University proposed Four capital projects to be passed. Various reactions have followed from the side of students.
During the delivery of the budget speech, the president affirmed the commitment of the government to capital projects.
"To consolidate on the momentum of the 2017 Budget’s implementation, many ongoing
capital projects have been provided for in the 2018 Budget. This is in line with our
commitment to appropriately fund ongoing capital projects to completion ." Muhammadu Buhari said.
The Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede led administration proposed: The construction of Access road and Car parks to centre of Entrepreneurship building of the university; Construction of Aeronautical Office Block workshop and seminar rooms; Construction of Nursing Science Building and Upgrading of the university Dam. The new projects will be executed to the tune of 89.1 Million naira.
However, students have tagged some of the proposed projects of the university management as 'misplacement of priorities' considering the need for more halls of residence and maintenance of the existing ones.
"Do we actually need Aeronautical building when all of the courses in the school have much students that the University does not have provisions for? 70% percent of the Students resides outside campus, which is not safe. The few staying on campus are staying in congested and dilapidated hostels." Olawuyi Taiwo, a part 3 student, pointed out.
Owobie Joseph, a part 1 student of the department of International relations told Premium Times that students have resorted to squatting with their friends.
"A room meant for 6 people is being occupied by 12 or more people. We actually need more hostel facilities and not Aeronautical buildings or so." Owobie explained.
Meanwhile, a final year student, Esther, stressed the need for more hostel facilities and the maintenance of the ones already in existence because students buy the available bed spaces for exorbitant prices.
"Though the school does not support selling of bed spaces, students are left with no other choice than to buy from their friends who have been allocated one. Some sell theirs about a hundred thousand naira." she said.
