History has repeated itself again as the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, under the leadership of Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, has proscribed the students union arm of the institution and this has caused a fight between students and management of the varsity.
It was being contemplated on in a meeting of students' Union leaders and campus journalists with the university principal officers where the Vice Chancellor st
ated emphatically that the university will be left with no other option than to suspend its activities if issues as regards the leadership of the Union is not settled amicably.
The letter of proscription issued today, which has been circulated round the campus has it that
" Following security reports of incessant fighting and unruly behaviour during the congresses of the Students' Union and the recalcitrant attitude of their leadership, it has become inevitable for the University Administration to suspend the activitues of the Students' Union."
Instances of happenings that led to the proscription were also given.
"President supporters beating up the speaker and vice versa, the fight between the Vice president, Jacob Grace and the Director of Socials, Adebayo Emmanuel, the protest staged a month ago, the hoodlums attack of November 1..."
The indefinite suspension is to take effect from the 6th of November and all properties of the Students' Union to be handed over to the Division of Students' Affairs (DSA) with immediate effect.
The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, in a press release;
Within a short period of its existence after its reinstatement, the Students' Union have, over time, manifested misdemeanours that are unacceptable within the academic community." he stated.
However, students challenged the security unit of the university led by Mr. Oyatokun Babatunde and Prof. Isiak Aransi, the Dean of the Division of Students' Affairs. Everyone was sent out of the building with the aim to weld the gates of the Students' Union building.
The clash led to beating up of students, breaking of the cameras of the university press team and throwing of stones and sachet water at the unit's vehicle.
Samuel Dunnex called the proscription an attempt to silence students and students should revolt against that .
"If the University cannot proscribe ASUU and NASU, I see no reason why our union should be proscribed. Students should resist this." Oluwalade Babatunde said.
Speaking with Falayi Temitope, the Acting President of the Union, he said that;
"The union cannot be proscribed just like that."
