ACE holds the 2nd Edition of Academia-Industrial Engagement

The OAU-ICT driven Knowledge Park (OAK-Park), Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE), Obafemi Awolowo University in collaboration with Academy Halogen (a subsidiary of Halogen Security Company) recently held a one day symposium in Lagos, Nigeria with the central theme on Digitizing Nigeria. The symposium is a follow-up to an earlier one, held on March 14, 2018.
Speaking at the event, the OAU Chairman of Council and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi stressed the resolve of the University Council to create an enabling environment for academia-industrial partnership to thrive.
In his own remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. E.O. Ogunbodede highlights some of the strides being made by the University consequent on the collaboration between the University and the Industry. The VC specifically mentioned the proposed pan of the University to establish a School of Media and Communication. The ACE Co-Centre Leader and Dean, Faculty of Technology, OAU, Prof. Sola Aderounmu introduced the OAU-ICT driven Knowledge Park (OAK-Park) to the audience and the facilities within the Park.
He informed the audience, made of up captains of industry, security personnel and media practitioners of the objectives of the OAK-park to create a regionally-recognized and acknowledged model that is driven by high quality postgraduate education for uptake and commercialization of research and technology to advance the growth of ICT industry.
The Centre, in his words, is actively providing launch pad for start-up companies borne out of university research activities, and collaboration with partnering ICT companies especially along Lagos axis, who will have the competitive advantage of proximity and direct access to the intellectual infrastructure and output of the university.
In a well-crafted and motivating presentation, the Vice-Chairman/GMD of Troyka Group (the parent body for Halogen Security), Dr. Jimi Awosika speaking on the topic ‘Business and the need for safety in Open Work’ opined that life is becoming an open book globally with a new emerging surveillance society. He affirmed the centrality of security in modern day business survival noting that intelligence is the new capital in the 4th Generation.
In his words, ‘Security vulnerabilities are occurring in all areas of life and asymmetric engagement is what rules here. Where relative strengths of people, organizations or nations differ significantly, negative human behavior can lead to attempts for competitors to exploit each other’s weaknesses and create deficiencies to neutralize, even annihilate competition’ He concluded by advocating for the meeting of .edu and .com to proffer solution hence the ongoing partnership between Academy Halogen and OAU on enterprise cyber risk management.
Professor Ndubuisi Ekekwe cerebral presentation took the audience through the interplay of technology, policy, business and law within the ambit of cyber security. He stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to develop capacity in Cyber Security Policy, Technology and Capability. He argued for a new set of cyber warriors infused with Artificial Intelligence to help tackle the menace of cyber criminals.
Earlier, Dr. Wale Adeagbo, the COO of Halogen and Chair of the organizing committee reiterated the commitment of Academy Halogen to work closely with OAU to deliver a professional Master programme in Cyber Security. In summing up the event and setting agenda for future engagement, the co-chair, LOC and ACE Communication Manager, Dr. Temitope Aladesanmi advocated for the rapid need to bridge skill gap that currently exists in the cyber security domain.
