PROTEST FOR PROPER WELFARISM AS STUDENTS BLOCK ROADS ALONG THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE UNIVERSITY
Students of the varsity blocked the roads around the bank area, denying people from moving in and out of the university via cars or busses this afternoon at about 2:10pm and it lasted for an hour. They were with placards to state their demands, with inscriptions on them stating that; "we need more hostels and proper welfarism".
This was declared alongside a lecture boycott which started at 12pm after the completion of the 72hrs ultimatum for the black out and poor water supply that has been since Sunday, 9th of July.
The blockage had the support of some of the students' Union leaders comprising of the CEC and the SRC. Also the Chairman and the secretary of the Non Academic Staff Union were present at the point where students gathered to stage the protest.
It was gathered by our correspondent that some of the students and lecturers are in support of the protest but against the blockage of the roads. With a view to gathering public opinion, these are the comments from both lecturers and students :
"We are not against protest. As a matter of fact, we bought placards and inscribed our demands on it, which ought to be done by the union leaders. We are not fighting against students but the management, so, I don't support the idea of blocking the roads."
- Hon. IBK, an executive member of the ERC
"We all know that the situation is not palatable but it's unfortunate that some people are instigating students against the new VC. They repaired the fault at the power house yesterday and the thing blew up again. Currently, they are working on it and students should give them another 24hrs before they carry out any action. "
- Ajilake (Mrs), lecturer.
" This is not the best option but this is the only way for now. We've not eaten and taken our bath since morning."
- A frustrated student.
Later on, the security unit of the university came around to pacify students ensuring them that every of their demands will be looked in to.
Afterwards, the union leaders present led the students to a Congress of Great Ife students at Main Bowl for deliberation and submissions.
