Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), is appealing to graduates of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) to contribute to the development of their alma mater. She emphasized the importance of alumni giving back to the institution that played a crucial role in their formative years.
Dabiri-Erewa made these remarks during a recent meeting in Abuja with the newly elected executive members of the Great Ife Alumni Association, Abuja chapter. In a statement released by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit at NiDCOM, Dabiri-Erewa commended the alumni for their continued dedication to OAU and their efforts to support its growth.
"I am proud to support this initiative, and I will work with you to make it possible to give back to our great institution. This is a legacy we will all be proud of,” she stated during the meeting.
Dabiri-Erewa, who graduated from the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1983, expressed her delight at the visit and assured the delegation of her support for various projects aimed at benefiting the university and its students.
Mr. Shola Bickersteth, the chairman of the Great Ife Alumni Association, Abuja chapter, informed Dabiri-Erewa that the chapter is set to host the 2025 edition of the global reunion for all OAU alumni, both those residing in Nigeria and those in the Diaspora. The primary goal of the reunion, according to Bickersteth, is to reconnect alumni from around the world and encourage them to contribute their resources and expertise to the betterment of their alma mater.
“This reunion promises to be a momentous occasion, bringing together Great Ife alumni from all walks of life to celebrate their shared heritage and contribute to the development of their beloved institution,” Bickersteth stated.
During the meeting, the alumni association also requested Dabiri-Erewa's support for a specific project addressing a critical need on the OAU campus: the accommodation deficit of 8,000 bed spaces. The project aims to provide improved and expanded accommodation facilities for students, thereby enhancing their learning experience and overall well-being on campus.
The Great Ife Alumni Association, Abuja branch, has committed to providing the necessary support to make this project a reality, believing it will significantly improve the students' living environment and contribute to the institution's long-term progress.
