Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) students are grappling with a severe cash shortage that is disrupting their daily financial activities, with Point of Service (POS) attendants imposing strict withdrawal limits.
A Part 2 Sociology student revealed the extent of the financial challenges. "I needed to withdraw ₦5,000 for travel to Ibadan, but POS operators at the Student Union Building (SUB) would only allow ₦3,000," he explained. To complete his withdrawal, he was forced to use multiple POS stands, splitting his transaction between two different points.
Another first-year student expressed frustration at being unable to withdraw funds to purchase his SER manual due to the cash restrictions. Similarly, a female student lamented that the ₦3,000 withdrawal limit prevented her from purchasing necessary foodstuffs, stating the amount was insufficient for her market needs.
Olorunfemi Emmanuel, a Part 2 Science faculty student, revealed he needed ₦15,000 for groceries but could only withdraw ₦6,000 by using multiple POS stands. "I had to compromise and buy only the essentials," he explained.
A POS attendant explained the underlying issue, noting that they were experiencing difficulties obtaining sufficient cash from banks, which necessitated the strict withdrawal limits.
The cash scarcity is creating significant challenges for students, impacting their ability to conduct basic financial transactions and meet essential daily needs.
