Students Resist Closure of New Buttery in Awolowo Hall Of Residence
In a display of solidarity and protest, students residing in Obafemi Awolowo University's Awolowo Hall have staunchly opposed the decision to close down the newly established buttery in Block 7 of the hall of residence. The resistance stems from accusations leveled by the Physical Planning and Development Unit (PPDU), who allege the structure to be illegal.
OAU Kilonshele Reporter gathered that officials from the PPDU visited the hall of residence on Monday, April 29th, and confronted the proprietor of the buttery, citing the illegality of the structure. Additionally, a poster denoting the structure as illegal was affixed to the buttery. However, students vehemently tore down the poster, asserting their discontent with the allegations.
Expressions of solidarity and support for the buttery owner reverberated throughout the hall, as students lamented what they perceive as a targeted attack. Many students attributed the accusations to be purportedly filed by other traders in the hall of residence, alleging unfair competition due to the buttery's ability to offer goods at lower prices.
"They always tell us to leave their market if we are not pleased with their price and go elsewhere. Our 'elsewhere' show, Unna want commot am... Nah all of them will go instead," remarked one of the students, encapsulating the sentiment of defiance among peers.
Another student recounted a personal experience, stating, "There was a time I needed cash and had only my last 1k. She gave me 1k without charges." Such anecdotes underscored the positive rapport between students and the buttery owner.
Furthermore, students praised the affordability and accessibility of goods sold at the new buttery, affirming its popularity within the hall. Reports from OAU Kilonshele indicate that the buttery's offerings are not only competitively priced but also in high demand, leading to swift turnover of merchandise.
Also, these notice of demolition were cited on structures in Fajuyi Hall of Residence.
