Students living in Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence have again, lamented the unavailability of water in the hostel. A Twitter user staying in the hostel, @kollydee4, tweeted that the issue continued this semester despite the protest that was done last semester.
Recall that, On the night of March 5th, 2024, it was reported that the Residents of Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence protested the unavailability of water in the hostel. This led to a temporary solution from the Students' Union, who in turn provided a tank of water to fill the reservoir at the entrance gate.
While the situation persists, the students staying in the hall are again clamoring for water. Speaking with OAU Kilonshele, a student noted that since there was no intervention from the school management yet, students have been fetching water from the well, since the semester began.
Meanwhile, there are three boreholes drilled inside the Hall, but none of the boreholes are being used.
An unknown student who spoke loudly in the background also raised the shortage of water alarm at the event that took place at Oduduwa Hall, where the Students' Union joined other family members and friends of Yinka Odumakin at the Maiden Edition of the Public Lecture to honor his death. He said in the Yoruba Language, 'Kò sí omi ni Àwo o', which when translated means 'There's no water in Àwo', referring to the Shortage of Water in Awolowo Hall of Residence.
After much trial to speak with the Executive Chairman of the Awolowo Hall of Residence, Seye Omisakin, which proved abortive, the General Secretary of the hall, who later responded to the messages of OAU Kilonshele reporter, noted that the temporary measure or solution that was made last semester to enable students to get water would still be put in place.
Recall that, the measure used to solve the issue temporarily last semester was a full water-loaded tanker brought to the hostel to supply water.
He also noted that the Executive Council of the Hall has met with officials of the university in charge of Students' related affairs and work is going to provide lasting solution to the issue.
