The department of Architecture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife has suspended her students' association, Ife Architecture Students' Association (IFASA) for misconduct by the students.
This news agency gathered that the association was suspended sometimes in November for misconduct by the students. It was confirmed that the association was suspended pending the time that the investigative panel set up by the department will report their feedback.
Speaking with our correspondent, the President of the association, Goodness Jesuola, confirmed the suspension and the reason for the suspension.
"Yeah, the association was suspended. Reports got to the department that some of our students didn't conduct themselves properly in some of our past activities. So the department wants to investigate and give recommendations," he said.
Investigations by our correspondent revealed that some students of the department were caught taking hard drugs which was one of the misconducts cited by the department.
However, when the Head of Department, Mr. Adetokunbo Ilesanmi was contacted, he confirmed that drug abuse was one of the misconducts and also explained the reason for the suspension.
He said "the association was suspended for misconducts. The department set up a panel to investigate the activities of the students and give recommendations as to the decisions that will be made."
When asked if it has anything to do with the executives, Mr Ilesanmi said "it doesn't have anything to do with the executives nor is the department against the association. it's just an investigation and a decision was made to suspend the association pending the time of the investigation after which recommendations will be given by the investigative panel."
Mr Ilesanmi also confirmed that the taking of hard drugs was part of the misconducts. When asked if the taking of hard drugs by some students was part of the misconducts, he said "I believe it's part."
Meanwhile, the suspension was met with surprises by the students as it wasn't expected, interviews with this news agency revealed.
A student, who demanded anonymity, stated that "the association was suspended because of misconduct. The first thing they did after it was revealed that there was a misconduct by the students was to suspend the association, it wasn't even expected."
