Again, OAU Students Stranded As Town-gboro Drivers Suspend Activities

On Tuesday, the commercial shuttle bus drivers known as Town-gboro working within OAU axis boycotted work and went on a strike action due to the Naira exchange crisis and transportation prices. They continually halted activities in demand for an increase in transport charges.



Meanwhile, on Wednesday, students, who were affected by the strike action, were stranded at the campus gate, as there were no buses to convey them to the university community. Students who narrated their ordeal said they were forced to trek to campus, as some classes were being held amidst the crisis. Since then, the Union Transport Management Commission and the Student's Union Leadership have provided buses to convey students to Campus.

 

According to the Secretary to the committee, the students were conveyed in and out of the campus with the Union Buses and other available vehicles. In a conversation with OAU KILONSHELE, the Transport Management Commission Secretary, Sumbade Saudiq affirmed that the situation is under control. He added that the Students' Union has suspended the commercial drivers, as they were agitating and not in compliance with the laid down prices for transportation on campus. He therefore assured that other means of transportation will be provided as soon as possible.

As at the period of gathering this report, the town-gboro drivers have been transporting students from different bus stops and highlighting at campus gate, first at #150 but subsequently at #100 per trip.
