Mother of Late OAU Student Confirms that Death is Not Due to Academic Records, Says Inaccurate Reports are Saddening

Mother of late OAU student, Opeyemi Grace Dara, has confirmed the statement re-issued by the institution spokesperson, Abiodun Olanrewaju, to Punch newspaper that poor academic records was not why Opeyemi Grace Dara committed suicide.
Opeyemi Grace Dara was said to have committed suicide after taking sniper two different times. The Institution spokesperson told Punch newspaper that she survived the first round of sniper she took but later died after taking another round.
"She was treated and discharged home to her parents. She was said to have been brought in by the parents and readmitted at the Intensive Care Unit of the OAUTHC last Thursday, August 1, after another dose of sniper, and she, unfortunately, died the next day. There are indications that she had an underlying medical condition."
When the news broke out on Saturday, it was widely reported that the death was as a result of poor academic record but further insight later revealed otherwise. The spokesperson of the institution told Punch that Opeyemi had a decent academic record and no outstanding course. Findings made by classmates also revealed that she had a decent academic record.
“Miss Dara is on a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.68 which qualified her, at least, to be an average student on a 2 – 2 class of grade. It is, therefore, our firm belief that a student who was on Second Class ((Lower Division) cannot be said to be poor academically, talk less of committing suicide because of such."
“In actual fact, Opeyemi Dara did not have any outstanding course except her project which she was yet to submit. The project couldn’t have been a challenge to her because she had authored two books – ‘Heels on Steel’ (a play) and ‘Let Me Run Mad Today’, (a poem) both published by the Words Rhymes and Rhythm Limited.
“Opeyemi Dara was admitted to the University in the 2014/2015 academic session and her graduating year result (2017/2018) indicate that she had passed all the departmental courses except, Research Method and Project (EGL 420). She had not submitted any essay for grading which is understandable by virtue of her encounter of April 22 and the fact that she had not reported in the University since then," Abiodun Olanrewaju said.
Mother of late Opeyemi in a conversation with OAU Kilonshele confirmed that she didn't commit suicide because of poor academic record and that Opeyemi was confirmed to be a good academic student.
"We know the kind of person Opeyemi is, she is brilliant academically - even her fellow classmates have confirmed her to be an outstanding student academically."
"There are one thousand and one reasons to leave this life but to attach it to weakness on the part of the deceased is sad - such a student even at rest will not be happy. The school has issued another release that clarified everything," Late Opeyemi's mother said.
She also told our correspondent that the management's role in the widespread inaccurate reports is saddening and she urged the students to stand up against writing unnecessarily about students.
"I urged the students to stand up against writing uneccessarily about students. The management should have just commented on her academic area not her academic records. Reading on the pages of newspaper that my daughter committed suicide due to bad academic records is a sad thing."
