Flood Renders Residents Homeless in Ile-Ife

The heavy downpour in the ancient city of Ile-Ife, Osun State, has led to the destruction of residents' properties and rendered some homeless as many houses have been flooded with rain.
OAU KILONSHELE confirmed that some sustained injuries as a result of the natural disaster and many nearly lost their lives as the nonstop rain started in the midnight of Saturday and lasted for almost a day.
Among those affected are the students of various Higher institutions in Ile-Ife; Obafemi Awolowo University, The polytechnic Ile-Ife and Oduduwa University Ipetumodu. Major areas like Mayfair, Lagere, Ibadan road and Asherifa are where the victims reside.
However, the flood was caused by the lack of a good drainage system as almost all the government road here in Ife did not have a good drainage and particularly all the affected areas.
Speaking with our journalist , I.A Ishola, a resident of Ibadan Road area explained that the disaster almost claimed his life.
"The erosion that nealy caused my life today is because almost all the motorable roads here in do no have drainage that even a small rain people will be having difficulty in getting to their various place of resident"
A student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Adebisi Elizabeth told OAU KILONSHELE about her homeless state.
"Look at me now, I don't have anywhere to stay and all my belongings as student have been flooded away because when the erosion started, I had to run for my dear life."
Another student, Adekola Joseph, lamented as he had nowhere to pass the night. "As I'm talking to you now, I'm going to sleep in Academics Area on campus because I'm homeless now."
"I called my mom, who sent me here to study, everything that happened today. She was crying." He said.
Jesu Dunsin, a student of the department of Food Science and technology sent a message to the news outfit.
" I saw books, wears and foodstuffs worth thousands, valuable documents all consumed by these waters.
The houses and their locations are not well planned, the old ones with roofing problems have been neglected by the owners cuz they care more about getting people into those houses than getting the houses ready for people!
Sheer wickedness all around the country.
This is a terrible thing that happened today.
In anyway you can help the affected, please do.
They're all around you, except you don't stay in Ife.
And even if you don't, call your friends and relative here to check on them, help the affected ones in any way you can." She posted.

Why do we always have to blame the government?....Some of these places have drainage systems, but people fill the drainage system with dirt, then blame the government.
