SSANU, NAAT, NASU STRIKE: OAU BRANCHES DECIDE THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSITY.
For almost a month now, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has begun an indefinite strike, which took effect from 13th of August. The strike was borne out of the government failure to fulfill the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with both academic and Non-Academic staff unions.
However, all non-academic staff unions-Non-Academic Staff of Universities and Associated Institutions (NASU), Senior staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologist (NAAT) have been contemplating on embarking on an indefinite strike for the same reason. This led to collating of referendum results on whether or not to embark on the indefinite strike at the branch levels.
In a meeting of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Wednesday in Abuja, an indefinite strike which will commence on Monday, September 11, was declared.
According to the Chairman of the committee, Samson Ugwoke, workers will not provide even skeletal services during the course of the strike.
In a conversation with Mr. Olusoji, a representative of NAAT to know the stance of OAU branch, he said;
"The national body has declared the strike and OAU workers are joining."
Speaking with our correspondent, Mr. Abu Adamu, a prominent member of OAU NASU made it known that OAU NASU has not decided.
"We've not decided yet because we have issues with our National body." he said.
It was gathered in a branch meeting of the three staff unions on the 28th of August that ; OAU NASU has issues with their national body because they were indifferent to their branch strike earlier this year. And they were not in support of the strike during the referendum.
