THE MISGUIDED DEMOCRACY
"The strongest democracies flourish from frequent and lively debate, but they endure when people of every background and belief find a way to set aside smaller differences in service of a greater purpose."
BARACK OBAMA,
God bless Nigeria, a country whose independence was attained 57 years ago. Today, 29th of May, marks another anniversary of the existence of Nigeria as a democratic state.
Abraham Lincoln's definition of democracy which answers the questions of who and to whom the leadership of the government is and for, is still applicable to our country.
However the purpose of determining the leadership through the choice of the followers is missing. Though we still have a democratic state but it is now being built on the foundation of tribalism, prejudices and religious segregation. Hence, these are the factors aiding the growth of corruption, incompetence of leaders, embezzlement at all levels, etc.
The concept of democracy gives room for proper ratification of prospective leaders without prejudices and tribal and religious sentiments. But the opposite is what is evident in our society.
It's high time we woke up and tackle these cankerworms eating up our democratic structure. It's until a 'Yoruba' is willing to vote for an 'Hausa' political aspirant and vice versa. That is when the nation can boast of a well structured democracy.
A better Nigeria lies in the unity of all tribes, religions and ideologies without the fear of domination lurking in a side, aimed at achieving a common goal . Let's work hand in hand to build a strong democratic state, which will be an object of envy for other countries of the world.
