OAU sportsmen threaten management, vow to boycott NUGA
IF THE SCHOOL WILL NOT AGREE TO OUR TERMS AND CONDITIONS, THEN, WE ARE READY TO BOYCOTT NUGA." says OAU athletes..
As confirmed by our journalists, OAU athletes have agreed to bow out of NUGA if OAU management refuses to subscribe to their terms and conditions after they have successfully qualified to participate in the competition by their outstanding brilliance at Pre-NUGA in Unilorin two weeks ago.
On the 12th of April, a meeting of all athletes was held in the SUB TV room. The main bone of contention was the poor state of welfarism in tandem with the irregular payment of their allowances during the pre-NUGA games in Unilorin.
It was resolved at the meeting after various submissions from the athletes that; the feeding allowance should be paid aside the competition allowance during the forthcoming NUGA games .
Also, the DSA in collaboration with the school management should be responsible for the feeding of all participating athletes. And that, they won't leave school premises if the school did not agree to their terms and conditions. Which means, they are willing to boycott the NUGA games that has been scheduled to commence on the 19th of April.
Following the resolution of the meeting, all team captains with the Sports Director of the students' union, Oluwamichael, went to the office of the DSA to meet with the Dean of the division. Afterwards, Dr (Mrs) Akinola, the Dean, instructed them to put their grievances in to writing which they did.
Furthermore, it was reported that the school management through the DSA complained about the unavailability of money to fund the proper welfarism of sportsmen. Then the Sports director poised the question of how the sports levy paid by every Great Ife student that is being collected on sessional basis is spent. This question remains unanswered till this moment.
According to one of the team captains, who will not like to disclose his identity. he said " after we've submitted the letter, we've not gotten any reply".
