The Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede has pinpointed unionism as a key ingredient in making graduates of the institution excel in Journalism even when the institution doesn't offer a degree in Media or Journalism.
He made the remark on Thursday while addressing a cross-section of post graduate students in the institution at the proposed Jimoh Ibrahim and Cambridge Business School Dean's interaction with Post Graduate students of the institution.
As part of his remarks, the VC said, " When you look at the field of Journalism in Nigeria, there is no Newspaper house that you will not find Great Ife graduate, and there is no president in this country over the last years that didn't have Ife graduate as one of the key Media persons." " Adesina is a major media person for president Buhari, Adeniyi was the Chief Spokesperson for Late President Yar Aduwa and many others who are graduates of OAU - but you'd realize that OAU doesn't have a program in Journalism or Mass Communication, so how did they get there?"
A question which was met with unionism as response from the audience.
"So if you suppress it, you are suppressing the future of students." He said.
He also seized the opportunity to express his shock at a memo he received earlier, prohibiting post graduate students, resident at the Murtala Muhammad Post Graduate Hall from holding Congress until further notice following a feud between members of the PG Hall Executive council.
Reacting to the Memo, he said "Yesterday, I got a memo saying that postgraduate students at the PG hall should no longer hold any congress until further notice, I was wowed. Who will issue this kind of memo? They are mature adults, they can do whatever they like, it is not right to issue that kind of memo."
Admonishing the PG Hall Executives, he stated that if someone has been called to serve, then the issue shouldn't get to a such critical point.
"I just want to plead with you, that whatever it is, bury whatever differences and work together. I as Vice Chancellor will not want to intervene in anything students are doing, even at undergraduate level not to talk about Post Graduate level." He stated.
He further advised the students to go about unionism in a way that is acceptable.
Meanwhile, the program scheduled for the day was however postponed till Monday, with Nigerian Lawyer, Politician, Business Man and Philanthropist, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim expected among the dignitaries in attendance.
