Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has committed to donating N1 billion for the restoration of Obafemi Awolowo University's (OAU) horticultural landscape. The announcement came during the inauguration of several campus projects named in her honor by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, as part of his 50th birthday celebrations.

On Thursday, Mrs. Tinubu visited the OAU campus in Ile-Ife, Osun State, to inaugurate the 2.7-kilometer Senator Oluremi Tinubu Way, complete with solar-powered street lamps, a state-of-the-art hostel, and a commemorative pavilion. These projects, gifted by Oba Ogunwusi, pay tribute to the First Lady's contributions to education, women's empowerment, and national unity.

Expressing dismay at the deterioration of the once-lush campus environment, Mrs. Tinubu reminisced about her undergraduate days, stating, "The campus used to be beautiful while I was here. Ife is crying out for help. It used to be a beautiful campus and the beauty must be restored." She attributed the decline to poor maintenance culture and urged immediate action to revitalize the university's aesthetic appeal.

In his remarks, Oba Ogunwusi explained the rationale behind naming the projects after Senator Tinubu. "A golden statue is erected to immortalise her virtuous person and to showcase the strength of a teacher, a mother, and a wife at the very heart of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife," the Ooni said. He further highlighted that the new facilities, particularly the solar-powered street lamps, had provided crucial support to students during recent campus blackouts.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by his deputy Kola Adewusi, reaffirmed the state government's commitment to infrastructure development across Osun State.

In a separate address at the Ooni's palace, the First Lady defended her husband's administration against criticisms of the current economic challenges. "We are just two years into our administration. We are not the cause of the current situation. We are trying to fix it and secure the future," Mrs. Tinubu asserted. She acknowledged the impact of subsidy removal but expressed optimism for Nigeria's future, stating, "With God on our side in the next two years, Nigeria will be greater than this."

Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the administration's determination to see through difficult reforms that previous governments couldn't implement. She called for patience and prayers from Nigerians, expressing confidence that within two years, the country would witness positive changes.
