Enough of the Oppression, Build New Hostels- PG Hall Undergraduate Residents

Falade Famous

Obafemi Awolowo University undergraduate students allocated to the Muritala Muhammed Postgraduate Hall of Residence last session have voiced their concerns over living conditions and treatment by postgraduate residents. The accommodation situation arose due to the merging of two batches for the 2022/2023 academic session, leading to a shortage of undergraduate housing.

Reports from undergraduate residents paint a picture of tension and alleged discrimination within the hall. One student, speaking on condition of anonymity, described issues during the examination period:

"During the exam period, there was water scarcity in the hall. Whenever the school brings in water with a tank to alleviate the situation, the PGites would hoard some water in a reservoir for themselves while they only allow each person to fetch just one or two buckets from the remaining that is meant for the public."

Another undergraduate resident highlighted concerns about access to communal spaces:

"As an undergraduate, there are limited places you can go to, you can't even use the common room. They act as if they do not want us in their Hall."

In light of these challenges, undergraduates who lived in the PG hall during the 2022/2023 academic session are calling for the construction of new hostels. They hope that additional accommodation will alleviate the current pressure on existing facilities and prevent similar situations in future academic years.
