The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has directed its members nationwide to boycott academic and other activities at the University of Ilorin. ASUU described the university’s ways of handling things as persistent acts of lawless, arbitrariness, violation of human and trade union rights and persecution of loyal members. The union also said that the academic staff of the university will not be allowed to carry out any academic activity in any public university in Nigeria. This was part of the resolutions reached at the end of its Awka National Executive Council meeting, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Sunday by the Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter of the union, Dr Deji Omole. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics are to commence a nationwide one-week warning strike on Monday. The President of ASUP, Mr. Usman Dutse, said during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday that academic and administrative exercise would be suspended in all public polytechnics across the country between noon of January 30, 2017 and February 6, 2017. He said that the National Executive Committee of ASUUP had given a directive to all public polytechnics to comply with the warning strike directive. According to him, the union decided to embark on a warning strike over the refusal of the government to implement the NEEDS Assessment report of July 2014 which showed that the polytechnics and colleges of education required N652.6 million to address the decay in infrastructure in the institutions.
